I'm a Patrick Berry fan myself, but I can see the argument for one of the young guns like David Steinberg or Paolo Pasco.

Byron Walden or Frank Longo are obviously solid choices if you want a real challenge.

Brendan Emmett Quigley. A good mix of easy, medium, and hard puzzles. Funny and topical themes.

A good choice. I never get that feeling of excitement when I see his byline, but his puzzles are always solid or better.

His website is my go-to for puzzles. I don't have newspaper subscriptions anymore, so in the past few years I haven't really done any other puzzles. I'm not even sure what's out there now.

I think BEQ was involved in the most recent Lollapuzzoola, which had some very creative puzzles. Worth it to buy this package if it's still available.

I have to get back in the game. I've been doing more reading before going to bed and neglecting any crossword fun.

Buying the Saturday paper and doing the physical NYT crossword over coffee is a peak experience. I will never give up this simple pleasure.

Don't care. The $2.50 per week is worth folding dat paper back and penning in the answers. Doing crosswords on your computer is a degenerate practice.

i always looked at whether it was a man and woman -- even when i had no clue who the constructors are.

if it's a woman constructor, i'm almost always going to have relative trouble with the puzzle.

male constructors have random fill with sports shit. women have stupid shit for fill.

This is interesting. I've never given the slightest thought to who makes the puzzle. I'll pay attention to this going forward. I really only looked at the sunday theme.

you're arguing that all the gimmicky shit like more than one letter in a box, or swap shit is a prole tell? interesting. never thought of it that way.

Author: chad here,

Not necessarily. Rebus puzzles (or other gimmicks) can be prestigious if executed well. HOWEVER, the constraints of a Sunday "theme" offer a much higher than normal chance that you're dealing with an oafish prole grid.

Oh I'm aware of that. Friday and Saturday are the hard ones. I still find Sunday fun. Call me a prole, but I enjoy a theme. I also feel very proud of myself whenever I figure out a rebus.
